I Am Special Children learn about themselves and each other. They are introduced to sharing (social,) feelings (social,) families and graphing their favorite things (math.)
Apples & Pumpkins– Through apples and pumpkins the class will discover seeds (science,) the color’s orange and red (science and art,) the difference in size and weight of apples and pumpkins (math) and Halloween (social studies). The children will make apple sauce and roast pumpkin seeds (science). This theme will end with a trip to the pumpkin patch.
Winter –The class will learn about different seasons with a focus on winter. The children experience changes of the earth (science,) animals we see in winter (science,) people in winter (social studies) and put together a huge winter mural (art.)
Transportation Cars, boats, planes and trains are just some of the types of transportation the class will learn about. The children will discover the wheel (science,) what makes a boat float (science,) imagine they are taking a ride on a ferry, airplane, bike etc. (creative movement) and go for a ride on the LIRR.
Shapes and Colors of the World – The children will explore the colors and the shapes that surround us. The class will discover how to use primary colors to make secondary colors (art & science,) how to feel and see basic shapes (science) and use their bodies to create shapes (creative movement).
Farm Animals – The class will discover what animals live on a farm and what their jobs are. The class will learn about eggs (science,) farm equipment (social studies) farm babies (science) and farm songs and poems (language.) They will end this theme with a visit to a real farm (social studies).
Sea Life – The ocean and bay are explored through books songs and hands-on experiences. The class will focus on animal life (science,) shells and rocks (science,) beach scenes and shell collages (art.) The class will visit the local bay and beach.
